Road of hope leads to Haiti
Thursday, 28 January 2010
The arrival of a helicopter which will enable those hurt in Haiti to reach safety at Hopital Sacre Coeur where they will get much needed medical attention.
MANY of you will be familiar with the Road of Hope charity - a local charity which delivers Christmas shoe boxes to deprived countries.
Rasharkin woman, Fiona Kelly, is hoping to once again gather local support and come to the aid of those living and dealing with the aftermath of Haiti's disastrous earthquake.
Fiona said: "Many local people want to give and don't know where to give to. However small the donations that come in, they will make a huge difference right now for the operations at Hopital Sacre Coeur."
Fiona has been in contact with a friend who has been working in Haiti for over four years, and is well established at a local hospital.
Fiona's friend, Denise Kelly, said: "I lived at the hospital campus from 2002-2006 and now work full-time from Dublin to ensure that the hospital has the medications, supplies, equipment, medical volunteers and finances it needs on a daily basis to provide the best medical care possible to the people of the region. I personally visit the hospital twice a year for 3-4 weeks each time. We have a staff of only two outside of Haiti but have the support of many volunteers. Additional details on the hospital and the services we provide there are available on our website www.crudem.org"
Hospital has no major damage
Denise continued: "Hopital Sacre Coeur is located in the town of Milot, about 70 miles north of Port au Prince. Although the earthquake tremors were felt at the hospital, we have no major damage. The hospital remains fully operational and is receiving patients who are being transported to us by the US Coast Guard and US Navy helicopters.
“The hospital staff on-site is well equipped to handle what they will face in the near term. Many more medical volunteers are scheduled for the coming days, weeks and months."
