THE DAD of a young Dunloy student who did his first ever solo glider flight just over a week ago aged just 14 has spoken of his pride in his son's achievement. Sean Scullion, flying since he was 10, soared over the mighty Benevenagh cliffs before gliding back down to the Ulster Gliding Club (UGC) airfield in Bellarena.
Proud dad Gavin told The Chronicle; "Sean was over the moon after doing it. He was slightly nervous before hand, not very nervous, he has been well trained. He was towed to 2000 ft above the ridge then released, conditions were perfect, the wind was blowing right, he had the place to himself.
“He did a 15 minute solo flight following the proper pattern back down to the airfield. It couldn't have worked out better."

Mr Anderson said: "Yes, I sent him on his first solo flight. He was very confident, conditions were very good on the day. He did everything right and it was more or less a perfect flight and one he'll never forgot. You never forget your first solo flight."
Dedicated Sean had been training for four years before his big flight and had accumulated over 30 hours flying time.
He had planned to do the flight back in early December on his 14th birthday, the youngest age allowed, but unfortunately weather conditions were against him.
“There was turbulence," Gavin said, "so we erred on the side of caution."
