LONG standing fears that the campus of Ballymoney Northern Regional College (NRC) is to close have finally been confirmed.
Though the word 'closure' wasn't used in last Friday's statement, the NRC was unambiguously clear in its intention to have all classes located in a new Coleraine campus building by September 2021. The NRC statement revealed that land at St Patrick's Parish Centre in Coleraine has been purchased and the process of appointing a design team for new campuses in Coleraine and Ballymena has begun.
“The project, aims to provide new buildings on the Coleraine Campus and at the Farm Lodge Campus in Ballymena for the 2021/22 academic year," the statement declared.
Commenting, local MLA Mervyn Storey said: "Regrettably this has been the direction of travel for sometime. It was clear to me from numerous conversations with both the NRC and the former Minister for DEL Stepehen Farry that the preferred option for a new build was in Coleraine and not Ballymoney.
“It seems that there is a concerted effort being made to have the majority of public services centred in Coleraine and there doesn't seem to be much desire for the retention of services in Ballymoney.
