Fears for hospitalís future thumbnail

A COUNCILLOR has voiced fears for the future of Coleraine's Causeway Hospital amid claims that health chiefs are considering scaling back children's ward services.
The Northern Trust has confirmed that senior clinicians have met during recent weeks "to consider how best to deliver paediatric services in the area" but insisted that no decisions have been made.
However, Councillor William McCandless told the Chronicle: "It has been brought to my attention that there is a meeting scheduled to take place at a Coleraine conference centre on May 31 to discuss the services provided at the children's ward in Causeway Hospital. The hospital currently has beds in the ward to provide for around 18 children, at full capacity.
“My source has advised me that one of the topics to be discussed would be that there should be no intake to the children's ward after 5pm and for maternity cases there would be no paediatrician on hand after this time."
