Calls for ‘immediate reverse’ of school grant decision thumbnail

SINN Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said that a proposed £3 million reduction for school uniform grants needs to be reversed immediately.
The Dunloy man's comments came after it was reported last week that the Department of Education had instructed the Education Authority to cut the amount spent on school uniform grants by £3 million and extended schools funding by £1.5 million. Mr.McGuigan said: "This is a shocking proposal which, if allowed to continue, will have a serious impact on children and families from less well off families.
“There are many families with multiple children living in North Antrim and elsewhere across the North who quite frankly could not afford school uniforms without the assistance of this grant.
“September can be an expensive month for parents and this grant is a God send to them.
“This is another example of Tory austerity policies affecting the poor and those that need help the most. This is the kind of policy that the DUP have given the Tory Government carte blanche to push through
“Sinn Féin have asked for urgent meetings with both the Education Authority and the Department of Education and will be calling on them to reverse this cut immediately."
