A PEDESTRIAN tunnel could be the solution to congestion surrounding the Dark Hedges, the Chronicle has learned.
Earlier this month the Department for Infrastructure announced the famous avenue would be closed to vehicles.
The move came as pressure mounted from environmental groups concerned over damage caused by cars and tour buses and their affect on the visitor experience. The Chronicle understands the road would have closed sooner but officials were worried about the safety of pedestrians accessing the site from the busy Ballinlea Road.
As a result there have been ongoing discussions with the owners of the adjacent Hedges Hotel to adapt their site to accommodate Dark Hedges visitors.
A planning application to alter the road layout and create pedestrian access between the hotel and the trees is currently under consideration.
But roads officials remain concerned over their need to cross a busy road.
