CONNOR McCloskey will give his Ford Fiesta R5 its gravel debut on Saturday's Grizedale Stages Rally.
McCloskey hopes to learn more about the potential of his newest car in the forests later this week with team-mate John Rowan, who finished runner-up on the 2012 event with Irishman Josh Moffett.
Before heading to the rally McCloskey plans to conduct a brief test on private land in the supermini, saying this will allow him to make any necessary changes to its set-up and the way that he drives it.
The ex-NI champion from Kilrea is not short on miles when it comes to competing on loose surface meetings this year as he tackled multiple BTRDA Championship rounds, albeit in a WRC-spec Fiesta.
“I have only done one rally in the R5 and that was on Tarmac at the Dog Leap Stages in August," McCloskey told Chronicle Sport. "We plan to enjoy ourselves at the Grizedale Stages and at the same time try and learn a bit about the car. The opening two stages are short but the next two are sixteen-milers so I'll be paying attention to things like carrying speed through the corners and braking late.
“That is going to be important because the R5, unlike a World Car, lacks punch out of the corners."
