Armoy farmerís tragic death recalled

Thursday, 18 January 2018

A CORONER has highlighted the need for drivers who are required to wear prescription glasses to follow the law.
Coroner Patrick McGurgan was speaking at an inquest into the death of a 93-year-old Armoy farmer who died after being struck by a car on the road he walked daily.
Robert Evan Robinson, of Drones Road, passed away in hospital from multiple injuries sustained in the collision on September 2, 2014, just a month before his 94th birthday.
The Ballymena inquest heard how the driver of the car which struck Mr Robinson had not been wearing glasses at the time of the collision, despite being informed by her optician in 2009 she was required to do so.
A file was prepared by police and sent to the Public Prosecution Service which took the decision not to prosecute.
Mr Robinson was hit by the car at around 5.45pm as he crossed the Drones Road from his farm to the nearby filling station.
The Coroner said the collision was "no doubt a tragic accident", however, it did "highlight in particular the absolute necessity to follow the requirements as laid down by the law".
Mr McGurgan said: "I think there is a degree of complacency by members of the public who think they can drive without glasses when they need them. The law is there for a particular reason and must be followed."
The inquest heard from Olivia Hemphill, who witnessed Mr Robinson being hit by the car.
In a statement she said: "As I was approaching I saw a car coming in the other direction. The man was either in the middle of the road or moving very slowly across the road when the car hit him."
Ms Hemphill also described how the car "almost swerved towards the central white line" before the collision.
