LAST Saturday saw the launch of a new drugs awareness leaflet at Belford Park community house in the Glebeside Estate, Ballymoney.
Produced by the North Antrim Community Branch of UNITE the union, the launch was attended by community leaders, including those from Glebeside and Margaret Square, as well as guest speaker Mr William Burns whose son Jamie died after taking just one pill.
Explaining, UNITE North Antrim Community Branch Chair, Mr Jim Wright said: "Drugs are becoming more prevalent in this part of the world, police aren't doing enough about the problem.
“The community police in Ballymoney do their best but there is a perception within the community that drug dealers are allowed to operate unhindered, whether it is budgetary or tactical, using people as informants."
“There are mental health issues associated with drugs use, prescription drug addiction is through the roof.
“Unless people make a stand this issue is going to get worse, it has never been a big problem in Ballymoney, but it could become one."
UNITE is encouraging anyone with information to contact police (details at bottom) or the local community association who will pass on any information.
2000 pamphlets are currently be distributed in Glebe, Carnany, Garryduff Road, Stranocum and Dervock.
Though the initial campaign is targeting Loyalist areas, Jim says that if anyone in Raskarkin or Dunloy or other villages who want leaflets can have them.
“Drugs are a blight on our whole society it doesn't matter if you are Protestant or Catholic," he said.
