THE provision of a pedestrian underpass at the Dark Hedges is a step closer after a planning application has now been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Council.
MLA said: "I welcome any proposal which will lead to an overall solution to all the issues at the Dark Hedges and I think this application is part of that."
The pedestrian tunnel plan, exclusively revealed by the Chronicle back in October, would allow safe passage of tourists from the Hedges Hotel car park to the iconic trees, made world famous by the hit TV show, Game of Thrones.
Lodged by Gracehill House, owners of the Hedges Hotel, the application seeks approval to make: "Alterations to the internal site road layout to provide a one way system, and provision of a pedestrian footpath from the cafe and an underpass below the Ballinlea Rd across to the Dark Hedges entrance."
Though a step forward, there are quite a few stages to go yet, with at least three different landowners involved and Technical Approval by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) also required.
Mr Storey continued: "Discussions are still ongoing with the Trust, Causeway Coast and Glens Council and Stephen Gray of Gracehill to ensure that we get a complete solution to the needs of all concerned at the Dark Hedges.
