AMERICA'S most senior diplomat in Northern Ireland was in Dervock yesterday, as part of his "Five Presidents in Five Days" outreach, exploring connections with the 25th US President John McKinley, whose ancestors hailed from Conagher near the village.
During his visit, the US Consul General Mr Dan Lawton said: "Organisations like Dervock & District Community Association (D&DCA) do much to promote McKinley's strong ties to North Antrim.
“I commend them for preserving our shared history for current and future generations.
“It is truly a great privilege to serve in a region where our ties are so strong, deep, and longstanding."
Mr Lawton, who wrote an article on his visit for the Chronicle (see adjoining page), was welcomed by local community leaders, including Chair of D&DCA, Mr Frankie Cunningham, who said:
“Today, provided that essential opening that the village basically required - RECOGNITION of our heritage."
