Inquest begins into PSNI officer’s death

Thursday, 15 March 2018

THE inquest into the death of a PSNI officer who took his own life in Ballymoney police station, on April 18 2016, began yesterday (Monday) in Laganside Court in Belfast.
55 year old father of two, Inspector Peter Magowan shot himself with a colleague's firearm shortly after returning from a period of sick leave.
Local political representatives had expressed shock at the time, with the Police Federation, Chair describing the death as an "immense tragedy" adding that dealing with psychological illnesses had not been the given the priority it deserved, within the force.
In the Preliminary hearing, back in November the coroner Paddy McGurgan had said he found it "strange" that the initial police investigation into the incident, hadn't looked at the deceased man's e-mail account.
The inquest is expected to take most of the week.
