A SCHOOL reunion will be fraught with mixed emotions as a group of
friends unite to run in memory of baby Ru.
Carly Shaker (nee McClean) lost her baby boy Ruan when he was only
eight-months-old in August last year, to a rare form of paediatric cancer.
The Ballymoney woman, who now lives in Kent, was left devastated when
her son, who she fondly nicknamed Ru, took his final breath in her arms.
Born a healthy 9lbs 6oz a few days before Christmas 2016, Ru thrived as
a healthy, happy baby. However, only six short months after he was
brought home, he began to take ill.
After three weeks of GP visits, health visitor appointments, out-of-hour
doctor visits and trips to their local A&E, baby Ru was rushed to the
Intensive Care Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Nicola Boyd, Ru's godmother, who also lives in Kent and is originally
from Ballymoney, explained: "Not only was he diagnosed with a malignant
tumour in his chest, but an extremely rare form of paediatric cancer.
“Ru underwent an emergency operation with the hope of removing the full
tumour - but it wasn't possible and it fell to chemotherapy to try and
get rid of the remaining bulk.
“The tumour was stabilised with chemotherapy but the consultant believed
that the deterioration in Ru's lungs was a clear sign of disease
