FEARS that a proposed 1 million makeover for Ballymoney town centre
could cause disruption for both shoppers and traders have been dispelled
by the town's Chamber of Commerce President Winnie Mellet and North
Antrim Assemblyman Mervyn Storey.
Their upbeat comments came after Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council
advertised for "experienced integrated consultancy teams" for the
Ballymoney Public Realm Scheme.
In a tender notice to consultants, the council said the major project
would "deliver a high quality, innovative and appropriate public realm
scheme in a designated area" of the town centre. The contract could take
nearly two years with construction work expected to cost 1 million and
be completed by the spring of 2020.
After Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts welcomed the possible
investment but warned that the proposed scheme could cause disruption in
the town centre,  a Council spokesperson said: "Council is seeking to
engage a consultancy team to assist in developing the design and
economic appraisal for a future possible scheme and to help inform any
future bid for funding to the Department of Communities. At this point
design options and the viability of any possible scheme remain unconfirmed."
Chamber President Mrs Mellett described the proposed project as
“positive" adding:  "This investment will be brilliant for Ballymoney,
we need to look at it in a positive light as opposed to looking at it
negatively. As much as there will be inevitable disruption in the town
centre due to the work, if it goes ahead, I think we need to focus on
the positives instead.
