MLA's passport warning

Thursday, 3 May 2018

SINN Féin MLA Philip McGuigan is urging people planning on travelling this summer to apply well in advance for their Irish passport.
Mr. McGuigan said: "There is currently a backlog in Irish passport applications which is having a knock on effect to the time it takes for them being issued.
“I would urge anyone travelling abroad on their holidays or for work to apply well in advance of their travel date.
"I would also caution people who have a current passport to check that date to make sure it is still valid.
“ I am signing up to 40 passports a week at the minute and in some cases it is for people travelling in a hurry. Whilst issue times vary I would definitely be making an application at least five weeks before I need a passport for travel. Any adult who is renewing an Irish passport can do it online and this method is quicker."
Mr McGuigan added: "This may all seem like common sense but unfortunately some people get caught up in the excitement of planning their holidays and forget about their passport until it's too late."
