A PROPOSAL to turn Bushmills' former police station into  tourist apartments has been lodged with planners.
The listed building constructed in 1939 was abandoned by the PSNI in 2012.
It was bought by local businessman Roy Bolton, the former owner of the Bushmills Inn who now runs the nearby French Rooms.
According to documents lodged with the planning application, he's proposing to refurbish the original neo-Georgian building with new-build accommodation to the rear.
The developer's Heritage Design and Access Statement says: The overall aim of the proposed development is to create much needed high quality tourist accommodation within the village of Bushmills using the former police station as the focal element of the design."
It goes on: "The original features, which contribute to the significance of particularly the external elevations viewed form Main Street, will be subject to sympathetic repair/refurbishment."
The development includes 12 studio apartments with shared dining area located between the old and new buildings.
Designers insist it will integrate well into a street largely made up of listed terraced properties.
“We believe the proposed development of the former police station site meets both the conservation area and listed building requirements and will be another unique asset to the development of the village," states their report.
Mr Bolton is chair of the Bushmills 2020 Steering Group which has worked closely with Causeway Coast and Glens Council on village regeneration.
