Coca-Cola Intermediate Cup third round
GLEBE Rangers knocked eight goals past amateur league side Shorts in a confidence boosting performance in Saturday's third round Coca-Cola Intermediate Cup game.
This was the biggest victory of all the third round games on Saturday. Tommy Elder, David McVicker and Peter Kennoway each grabbed two goals apiece with goalkeeper Brian Kane hitting one from the penalty spot and Ryan McFadden getting the other.
It was 4-0 to the Glebe at half-time, an early goal within the first 10 minutes setting them on their way.
Manager Peter Cairns was without question happy about the result but what pleased him more was the performance.
“The pitch wasn't in good shape at all so getting that early goal settled us," Cairns told Chronicle Sport on Monday.
“I changed about a few things on Saturday, changed the formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 so thankfully that worked out well. The players did all that we asked of them and the adapted well to the changes.
“They knocked the ball about well on the surface considering what it was like and we played some good football and enjoyed it. I've tried to get them to speed up their football, playing one, two and three touches, and on Saturday they did that and I think that's something we can work on and build upon."
Unfortunately with Glebe out of the JJB Sports Irish Cup, they are not in action this weekend, something that Cairns would have preferred given Saturday's confidence boosting win, but at the same time he will use this week to continue to get to know the players and they him.
“We've got Newry City away on the 21st and we'll work towards that. I probably would have preferred to have been out again this weekend, but we'll use it to our advantage and train on Tuesday and Thursday nights as normal and again on Saturday, and hopefully get out onto the pitch for some good sessions."
The week off will also give the likes of Nigel Turner and Tommy Elder more time to recover from minor injuries. Turner was forced out of Saturday's game during the warm-up with a groin strain while Elder was forced off just after scoring his second goal with a foot injury. There's less positive news for Lee Forgrave who could be out for a couple of weeks with ankle ligament damage.
