Coca-Cola Intermediate Cup third round
BALLYMONEY United ensured safe passage through to the next round of the Coca-Cola Intermediate Cup with a resounding thumping of Desertmartin on Saturday.
Mark McKane and Ian Christie put Paul Gaston's side 2-0 up before the Ballymena & Provincial Intermediate League Premier Division side managed to pull a goal back but a third from Willie Wilkinson just before half-time knocked the stuffing out of the home side and it was all one way traffic in the second half with Paul Keane, Wilkinson again and brothers Mark and Gerard Gillan completing the rout.
“It was easy for us," Gaston told Chronicle Sport on Monday. "But we had a job to do. We had to beat them and we had to be competitive. The boys were super. I rested a few players and the boys that came in did well and they've given us a bit of a headache ahead of Saturday's Irish Cup game against Bangor. But it's good.
“Saturday showed that we can score goals all over the park that we are not just reliant on Mark Gillan. Willie has scored four in the last four games, Ian Christie scored again and Paul Kane gets goals for us as well. Mark McKane broke his duck as well by getting one."
