Glebe Rangers....1
GLEBE Rangers took a fantastic point at Newry City on Saturday, but it so could have been all three only for substitute Mary Havern's 90th minute equaliser.
Still, for Peter Cairns' side, who had nothing to lose coming to Newry City getting a point on the board, will add to the team's confidence after their 8-0 Intermediate Cup win over Shorts as he continues to rebuild it following their struggling start to the 2011/2012 season.
Adam McCart put Glebe in front in the 15th minute as he reacted quicker to the ball coming back off the crossbar and with Brian Kane in great form in the visitors' nets and their defence standing firm despite an onslaught in the second half, it looked like they might just hang on and pull off a shock victory at the Showgrounds. But in the final minutes of the game, Newry managed to breach the Glebe defence and took a share of the spoils with both hands.
The Glebe defence stood resolute in the first half. An early Darragh Hanaphy shot was easily stopped by Brian Kane in the visiting goal, while Glebe went close at the other end when McAllister shot over after Gareth Buchanan and Paul Donegan collided in the Newry box.
The visitors made up for that miss when they took the lead in the 15th minute. Newry failed to deal with a free kick into the box and when the ball rebounded off the bar, Adam McCart fired it into the Newry net, as Newry conceded only their second goal at home all season.
The home side started the second half on the front foot, but still weren't troubling Kane in the Glebe goal, although he would have been glad of his defender's efforts in deflecting Hanaphy's shot wide.
Glebe were working hard and twice Gareth Buchanan came to Newry's rescue with fine saves to keep the deficit manageable.
Newry spurned a great chance when sub David Masterson fired over from a Hanaphy cross. Then another sub, Marty Havern, stumbled through a couple of chances but saw his weak effort cleared off the line by McCooke. Despite the increasing pressure, Kane had still seen relatively little action, but he was belatedly called upon to save efforts from Havern and Stephen McCabe.
And just as it looked like Glebe were going to record a massive win over the Division One title chasers, Hanaphy showed excellent composure to create the chance by the touchline and his cross was turned in from close range by Havern in the 90th minute. Newry forced a series of corners in stoppage time but The Glebe held out to take a point home with them.
