Goalkeepers in the wars

Thursday, 2 February 2012

GLEBE Rangers and Ballymoney United made fourth round Coca-Cola Intermediate Cup exits on Saturday, their defeats further compounded by injuries to both goalkeepers. Brian Kane was involved in a nasty incident early on, which knocked him out, while his Ballymoney United counterpart Bryan Moore had to give in to a back injury late in the first half.
Glebe lost out 2-0 to Larne at Inver Park, two goals in nine minutes midway through the second half effectively ending the Championship One side's hopes of getting through to the fifth round.
For Paul Gaston's Ballymoney United side, they were left to rue leaving their shooting boots behind them, as they went down 2-1 to Coagh United at Hagan Park.
Kane is likely to be out of action for a few weeks. He had tried to come through a crowd of players to collect a free kick crossed into the box and collided with one of his own players. He was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off before eventually leaving the ground in an ambulance as a precautionary measure. Outfield substitute, David McVicker took over goalkeeping duties and indeed pulled off a few good saves.
In the United game, Moore had to receive two bouts of treatment on his injured back during the first half but could not continue. Paul Keane replaced Moore between the sticks.
Gaston told Chronicle Sport on Monday that he hopes Moore will be back in action for their crucial JJB Sports Irish Cup sixth round game at home to Newry City on Saturday week. For Kane, however, he could be sidelined for a few weeks, but he might not miss any games because Saturday's league game at home to Limavady United has been postponed because the Roesiders have to play their rearranged Intermediate Cup game against Ballyclare Comrades from last weekend, and the following weekend it's Irish Cup day.
“We thought at first Brian might have fractured a cheekbone, but thankfully he hasn't and he was released from hospital on Saturday night," said Glebe boss Peter Cairns.
Ballymoney make a return to league action this weekend with a trip to PSNI, however, Glebe's game against Limavady United has had to be rescheduled because their opponents have to play their postponed Intermediate Cup game against Ballyclare Comrades.
