Ballymoney United back to winning ways

Thursday, 6 November 2008

BALLYMONEY UNITED got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Bourneview Young Men in the Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
The tie was originally to be played in Lurgan but was switched to the Riada Centre.
And Joe McCall's side took full advantage of the big playing surface to advance to the next stage - and boost morale in the process.
After a 3-0 league defeat against Ards, this was just the tonic required and Ballymoney now await the draw for the second round. Unfortunately, instead of getting the chance to build some momentum, United have a blank weekend.
“It's nice to go into a wee break on the back of a win but at the same time when you do win you want the games to keep coming," said manager Joe McCall.
Goals from David Gage, David Nicholl and Adam McKinney sealed a comfortable passage into this week's draw.
“Even taking into account the quality of opposition, I was much happier with the performance," added Joe.
“Our quality of football was good and we created a lot of chances. We could have won by six or seven."
McCall knows what it takes to win the Intermediate Cup, having tasted success as a player twice during his days with Chimney Corner.
“I told the players this is the hardest one to win. There might be a bit more glamour associated with the Steel and Sons Cup but this is the toughest because all the teams enter this competition."
Ballymoney will have a free weekend now which may prove a blessing in disguise.
“We have a few players recovering from injury so the extra week off might help them.
“We will have two hard training sessions this week and give most of the boys a day off.
“Those that need a game to help their fitness will be given a run out with the Reserves."
