Springwell runners compete at Seeley Cup 10K in Belfast thumbnailSpringwell’s Karen McLaughlin at the Seeley Cup 10K.

SATURDAY November 26 saw almost 1,000 athletes in Ormeau Park for the 35th annual Seeley Cup 10K road race which incorporated the NI & Ulster 10K (Road) Championships. The race was also the final event of the inaugural Novosco 10k Grand Prix, a popular age-graded series. The Seeley Cup is one of the most popular races in the calendar, attracting a wealth of talent and seen as the closing race of the road racing season.
The wintry, freezing conditions of the week gave way to dull and misty but milder weather on Saturday which made for perfect running conditions.
The lapped race started on the Ormeau embankment and finished in Ormeau Park, taking in a relatively fast route around the embankment and park.
Foyle Valley AC's Scott Rankin was the early race favourite having taken the runner up spot in 2015 and he made his intentions clear from the start, establishing a significant lead by the time he reached both the 3K and 6K check points.
In the chasing pack, Conan McCaughey (Derry Track Club), John Williamson (Derry Track Club), Eoghain McGinley (Letterkenny AC) and Neil Johnston (Springwell Running Club) worked together to close the gap on Scott and, in the final 3K, Derry Track Club men John and Conan increased the pace with John catching Scott and the pair battling it out for the remainder of the race with Conan just behind.
In the end, John broke the tape first with an incredible finish. He crossed the line in 31.05 with Scott following in 31.10 and Conan in 31.12. Neil Johnston finished in fourth to set a new 10K club record for Springwell in 31.24.
Springwell had another seven athletes taking part in the race with some impressive individual performances.
