ON Saturday, Ballymoney First XI hosted Portadown at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre.
With this being their final game before the Christmas break Ballymoney were hoping to finish 2016 with a win which would see them sitting top of the table into the New Year.
They began the game confidently with the front line of Jessica Moore, Susie Brown and Jan Hamilton putting the Portadown defence under pressure right from the first whistle.
An early penalty corner saw Ruth Sutherland test the Portadown keeper with a stinging strike which the keeper only just managed to divert round the post with an outstretched leg.
As the first half developed there were further opportunities for Ballymoney to open the scoring but it wasn't until the 21st minute that they managed to break the deadlock.
Another penalty corner saw a variation with the ball slipped to Jessica Moore who then set up Rachel Minihan in front of goal. Rachel made no mistake with her shot as she hammered the ball past the helpless keeper.
The second half saw Portadown determined to get something from this game with a lot of early pressure on the Ballymoney goal.
The home keeper Jodie Shannon was forced into a number of saves but she was equal to anything the Portadown forwards could conjure up.
