McGonigle at the double thumbnailColeraine defender Lyndon Kane and goalscorer Jamie McGonigle celebrate after combining for the latter to open the scoring in Saturdy’s league win over Carrick Rangers.

COLERAINE bade farewell to another topsy-turvy year with a first win since November 19 when a brace from Jamie McGonigle earned them a 2-0 win over Carrick Rangers at the Showgrounds on New Year's Eve. The young striker scored once in each half to claim a welcome three points for the hosts who have failed to earn a win bonus since defeating Ballinamallard Utd 3-1 over five weeks ago.
McGonigle had already gone closest for Coleraine - testing Carrick keeper Brian Neeson with a well-struck left foot volley in the 13th minute - before he opened the scoring just after the half hour.
Good work on the right wing from Ian Parkhill and Lyndon Kane saw the latter make room for a cross deep into the heart of the Carrick penalty area.
McGonigle reacted quickest of everyone to get in front of his marker and direct a powerful header low into the car corner past a helpless Neeson.
Coleraine continued to dominate possession as the half wore on though Daniel Kelly went close to levelling just before the break when he was given time and space to attempt an ambitious overhead kick which sailed high over Chris Johns's crossbar.
