BALLYMONEY First XI remain in the hunt for league title honours following a hard-earned 2-1 away win at Lisnagarvey at the weekend in their penultimate outing.
This was a crucial game for the 'Toon' to take maximum points if they wished to maintain their table-topping position, but with their four regular defenders unavailable to play for various reasons it was going to require a significant shuffle of the pack by coach Richard Fairman to select his team.
The home started brightly, forcing an early penalty corner, but Katherine Katherine Gawne was quick off the line to run the shot down and prevent the home side from capitalising.
As Ballymoney settled into the game Lauren Steen, who was making a welcome return to the heart of defence, began taking control from the back and along with the versatile Minihan sisters ensured the defensive line was as strong as ever.
The first chance of the match for Ballymoney saw Rachel Minihan make a well-timed tackle to dispossess her opponent before passing to Olivia Mullan. Olivia was able to burst forward into attack and play an enticing ball across goal which Katherine Gawne dived towards to deflect goalwards.
