Ballymoney seal league title with Ophir victory thumbnailBallymoney 1st XV players and coaches celebrate winning the Kukri Championship Division Three title.

BALLYMONEY 1st XV were crowned league champions on Saturday as they defeated Ophir in their final home game of the season.
Earlier in the week Ophir failed to field fifteen players so conceded the double header meaning Ballymoney were crowned league winners before a ball was kicked. But with Clelland and Hanna wanting a final game at home before the season ended they offered Ophir the players they needed, giving an opportunity to promising Dalriada players Thomas Hunter, Denis Posternik and Jack Dowey.
The game kicked-off in front of a huge home crowd and within several minutes winger Gary Pattison opened the scoring with this converted by Andrew Young. This was the start of the onslaught and by half-time Ballymoney were leading 36-0 with further tries from Nathaniel Steele, Thomas Hunter, Adam Pollock, Gary Pattison and Mike Armstrong.
The second half was similar with tries being run in at will; Michael Allan (2), Jordan Munnis, Thomas Hunter, David McKeeman, James Clelland and Jack Dowey all got their name on the score sheet. With the score at 81-0 the referee decided to blow the whistle early and end what was a one-sided affair, giving Ballymoney the chance to celebrate their league win in front of the home support.
Speaking after the game, coaches James Cleland and Jonny Hanna said: "Fair play to Ophir who made the journey down with only twelve players, but with a large crowd anticipated for the final home game, we felt it was important to play the game.
