National champion targets Irish squad thumbnail

SCHOOLBOY Jack Eakin has strengthened his case for a place in Ireland's Olympic Start Squad following his medal winning performances at the 2017 Irish National Championships in Dublin.
Ten months after making the step up to Elite One level, the nine-year-old picked up five gold and two silver medals on his way to clinching the overall title with Rathgael Gymnastics Club.
Jack - who until last year was a member of Sika Gymnastics Club in Coleraine and lived in Mosside before moving with his family to Magherafelt - is believed to have caught the attention of talent scouts following his eye-catching displays on the vault and the floor. Mum Kerry admits his rate of progress has taken everyone by surprise as he only started the sport back in 2015.
