ULSTER rugby prospect Sapphire Dudley hopes the World Cup being held in Ireland this month will help local clubs like Coleraine and Ballymoney attract enough fresh talent to field a women's side at adult level on a regular basis.
The 24-year-old from Ballymoney made her Ulster debut in last December's concluding interpro game with Connacht and currently lines out for Ballynahinch at club level after Coleraine's women's team folded due to lack of numbers.
However, relatively recent covert Dudley is expecting the World Cup to provide positive spin-offs for female participation in rugby with the televised tournament helping encourage more girls to give it a try.
“I'd like to think that hosting the World Cup will prove a fantastic catalyst for women's rugby growth, which is badly needed in Ulster, with plenty of young girls getting inspired by the tournament and then having the opportunity to actually take up playing," says Sapphire.
