WORK is already underway to find a suitable successor to North West 200's long-serving Event Director Mervyn Whyte, Coleraine and District Motor Club has said.
It was announced on Thursday that Whyte will carry out the role for another year at least as efforts are made behind the scenes to draw up a succession strategy.
Those who joined calls for Whyte to stay in the post included Alastair Seeley - the most successful rider in North West 200 history with twenty one race victories.
Seeley said the world famous event had benefited significantly during Whyte's seventeen year tenure as Event Director and that he would like to see this continue.
The decision to remain at the helm follows months of discussions between Whyte and wife Hazel, Event Co-ordinator Gillian Lloyd and Operations Manager Fergus McKay. Whyte raised the prospect of stepping down from his post following May's event, with on-going struggles to secure funding one of the contributing factors.
