BALLYMONEY born ice skater Sam McAllister says a Personal Best performance at the Denkova-Staviski Cup has strengthened his resolve to secure a place at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China.
An in-form McAllister set a new benchmark for Irish skating at the event in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the start of this month by recording 54.29 points in the Junior Men's Short Programme. He made sure of first place by achieving another National Best in the Free Skating event to end up with a 158.69 total.
Reflecting on his achievement, McAllister told Chronicle Sport it had exceeded his expectations. "I never believed I would earn such a high score in Sofia. It was more than I dreamed possible," he said.
“I'll be training really hard for the Junior Worlds in Bulgaria next March; I booked my place there by picking up enough qualifying points at the Junior Grand Prix in Italy recently. I know the standard will be really high - I'll be competing against the very best skater from every country in the world - but it will be such an honour to represent Ireland. I want to do my very best and make them very proud.
