IN blustery, and at times wet, conditions, Joseph McGonigle and Ciaran Geaney enjoyed a fine Turkey Run Rally victory on their World Rally Car debut.
The pair recorded quickest times on five of the event's six special stages to score the win by almost twenty seconds from second-placed Desi Henry.
Top seed McGonigle entered the traditional end-of-season rally as a warm-up for this year's National Rally Championship, which kicks off in mid-March.
Making the switch from an R5 car to a Mini Countryman for the 2018 season, McGonigle wanted seat time to familiarise himself with his new mount.
“The result has definitely given me a lot of confidence," he told Chronicle Sport. "The conditions were really tricky, especially after the downpour at the start of the event; on the third stage there was a lot of aquaplaning but the Mini worked really well. It was fantastic and I felt right at home in it. In many ways the Mini is very similar to my older Skoda Fabia S2000. The only difference is it has a good bit more power to play with," he added.
