THE depth of world class sporting talent on the Causeway Coast has again been highlighted following the news that four local athletes have been selected to represent Northern Ireland at this year's Commonwealth Games.
Experienced Ballymoney bowlers Gary Kelly and Donna McCloy are travelling to the Southern Hemisphere in early April as is promising Skeet-shooter Gareth McAuley and record-breaking Ballycastle cyclist, Eileen Burns.
Northern Ireland team selectors announced the eighty eight strong panel last week, with preparations for the Commonwealth Games on Australia's picturesque Gold Coast starting in earnest for the majority of them.
For McCloy, this will be the sixth time she has pulled on the Green and White jersey, while Burns and McAuley are set to get their first taste of what it is like to compete on one of the world's biggest sporting stages.
Having played bowls since the age of eighteen, she describes it as "the pinnacle of a bowler's career. We have our own World Bowls but the Commonwealth Games is on a different level as it is a mixture of sports," McCloy told Chronicle Sport.
“I'm extremely proud and privileged to have been named in the squad. With the five lady team the expectation is to try and make it out of the qualification group and take it from there."
